Historical Christmas market Christmas time at Wartburg Castle
For many years now, the historical Christmas market at Wartburg Castle has transported visitors back to a bygone era. You'll meet travelling merchants as well as all kinds of artisans – from candlemakers and glassblowers to stonemasons and herbalists. Musicians are on hand to provide the entertainment and create a festive atmosphere – and all this against the magnificent backdrop of the famous Wartburg Castle, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999.
Romantic atmosphere within historical walls
At Christmas time, children cannot help but be captivated by the magical atmosphere within these ancient walls.
The run-up to Christmas is made all the more special by the atmospheric Advent concerts in the ceremonial hall and the medieval musicians, performers and puppeteers in the castle courtyards.
The historical Christmas market at Wartburg Castle opens on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 7pm.
The ceremonial hall at the castle and the famous Luther Room are also open to visitors for a small fee. There is, of course, also an opportunity to join one of the guided tours of the main medieval castle building, which are held at regular intervals. From the south tower, you can enjoy magical views of the wintry landscape of the Thuringian Forest.
The admission fee is €5.00 per person on all days.
Parking / public transport
If the Wartburg Castle car park is full, we would ask you to make use of the public car parks on Mariental and the bus services. A special bus timetable has been organised for visitors to the Christmas market.
The Wartburg Express will also be offering nostalgia-filled rides to the Christmas market on 3 and 4 December 2016. For more information, please visit www.bahnnostalgie-thueringen.de.
